EDUCATION

Dr. Lipton graduated from Middlebury College and attended medical school at the State University of New York, Upstate Medical Center.

RESIDENCY

He completed residency training in psychiatry at Hillside Hospital (now Zucker Hillside Hospital) in Glen Oaks, NY and Bergen Pines County Hospital (now Bergen Regional Medical Center) in Paramus, NJ. During his residency training, he worked with some of the pioneers in psychopharmacology including George Simpson, Donald Klein and Nathan S. Kline.

WORK WITH DR. NATHAN KLINE

Nathan Kline, a two time Lasker award winner and widely regarded as the father of American psychopharmacology, was conducting research trials at Bergen Pines. Dr. Lipton ultimately began working in Dr. Kline’s private practice in Manhattan and continued the practice after Dr. Kline’s death in 1983.

Dr. Lipton participated in clinical research trials during his years with Dr. Kline and was an individual investigator in a compassionate use trial of clozapine before the medication was marketed. He was a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Medical Center from 1983 until 2002.

PRACTICE AND PHILOSOPHY

Dr. Lipton treats adult and adolescent patients across the psychiatric diagnostic spectrum with particular emphasis on mood, anxiety and attention deficit disorders. He frequently treats patients who have not previously, or only partially, responded to treatment.

Although Dr. Lipton provides medication treatment, he strongly believes in spending enough time with patients to develop a good understanding of their life history and current circumstances to formulate an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. He avoids visits that are merely “med checks” and feels that most often, well-intentioned as they may be, primary care providers do not have adequate time for a complete evaluation of psychiatric problems. Referrals are frequently made to psychotherapists for additional treatment.
